Although the tide is out — some 500km out — the cocktails are flowing and the salsa is blazing on Potato Island, a strip of sand along the bank of the Saar.
I may have said it before, but your phone has a great camera! And, I love your pix.
I was so surprised to see a TAPIR comment on Astoria, Oregon, Daily Photo :) I'm thrilled that Saarbrucken has a new tapir! They do seem to get lonely and to enjoy each other's company. Barring another tapir, they seem to enjoy other animals, so they're not the loners that so many books have said they were! Thanks for the update. I hadn't heard about this new tapir! Maybe you should visit with your phone?
Do you know the history of the Strandkörbe? I hadn't seen these things (or maybe I had never noticed) until I moved to CH and have been curious about them. Maybe I should pull up Google and see what comes up.
To my eye, an incongrous item to have on a beach. It would not stay pristine for long, with the salt and the sand. Even if they bring it in each evening.
I guess that is covered by their marketing budget ...

I have been leaving the zoo and the botanical gardens for a time when I run out of photographic ideas with a more local flavour. Maybe for the tapir's sake, I will bump the zoo up the queue.
Carraol: has inner sound in it?
I think you have to bring your own ipod.

The Strandkorb (literally “beach basket”) was invented by a basket maker in Rostock in 1992. I think they became popular in England, back in the times when no one enterd the beach unless they were fully clothed from the neck down to the knees. However, it is on the North Sea coast of Germany where the tradition still lives on. As two-seaters they are a rather romantic device.
joo: Potato Island? Lovely name!
Unfortunately, they have renamed it to Big Island, although the domain name lives on.
Ada: quelle puissance de la Lune
Incroyable, non? Mais si on ferme les yeux, on peut écouter les mouettes et sentir la mer.
Martina: Haha, I suppose they do that at every river in Germany now
You have a Potato Island in Mainz, too? Is that where Gutenberg drank his cocktails?
Julie: It would not stay pristine for long, with the salt and the sand.
Well, this particular Strandkorb is pretty safe from the salt - given the 500km separating it from the sea.

The chair looks splendid for cocktails, has inner sound in it? Cheers.

ReplyDeletePotato Island? Lovely name! Must be nice to have a couple of drinks there:)
ReplyDeleteThis seems the place to be in the summer... I love Strandkörbe. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteLa marée basse et la mer qui s'est retirée à quelque 500 km - quelle puissance de la Lune ;)
ReplyDeleteHaha, I suppose they do that at every river in Germany now - but where is the summer and the sun to hide from? ;-)
ReplyDeleteNice colours and saturation.
