old crane, sky

Old blue crane

A crane whose legs straddle the towpath along the Saar. It obviously was able to unload boats. It looks like it has seen better days and I am not sure if it still works. Nearby there is plaque that explains that there used to be a power station here that was used during the 1950s. There is also a picture of the day in the 1990s when they detonated explosives and reduced the massive power station to rubble. I would have loved to have taken a photograph of that.

Pithead in blue

The other shots of pitheads in this blog have been of closed pits and that is pretty typical on both the French and German sides of the border. But the wheel of the pithead frame in the photo was turning as I took this shot. In Petite Rosselle, men are still risking their lungs and their lives to maintain our energy hungry civilisation.

Maria Königin from close up. The church was designed by the architect Rudolf Schwarz and completed in 1959. Wikipedia provides a view of the interior.

Baying blue deer: This deer has been stranded on a wall in front of the castle after Luxembourg and the surrounding area were European Capital of Culture in 2007.

Cherub Silhouette: This charming, chubby figure spends his days in the garden behind the Schloss. The main entrance to the Schloss is on the other side, and it was not apparent to me until the day of this photo that such a garden even existed.

Atom in the Sky: These metallic orbits are located on the pavement outside one of the adminsitrative buildings on the South bank of the Saar.

Light temple from below : The object at the bottom of the photo is the work of Edward Allington. At night it casts a light show over the Saar.
