Old mining village
In Saarland, this red-brick style of building is only to be found in mining settlements such as this, dating back to the end of the 19th century.

Inner city living
Although English towns rarely have them, three to five story apartment buildings dating back to the end of the 1900s are a common feature in the centre of many European and North American cities. In Edinburgh or Glasgow, they would be called tenements. This photo is an attractive example of Saarbrücken's variation on this theme. It is in a fashionable area, a few metres away from the art gallery with the big metal tentacle.

Roundabout à la française
Following the well-signposted cycle route from the Saar to Petite Rosselle, I travelled through kilometres of woods then came to a mining village. Am I in France or Germany? The border is no more, so there are no checkpoints to cross. Within seconds you can tell which country it is. Everything is the same but slightly different. The colours of the houses are different, the use of French balconies, the way they cut their trees — and the use of roundabouts.
